The vast majority of pedestrians do not even think about them, but for those with mobility problems, the curbs and slopes found on pedestrian crossings can sometimes be challenging and often insurmountable.
However these problems faced by disabled pedestrians will soon be destined to history in Fuengirola. The Town Hall has said it aspires to become, in the words of the Mayor; Esperanza Oña, “the town with the least number of architectural barriers and the most accessible in Andalucía.”

According to the Mayor the project has been given a time frame of 12 months although the goal is to complete it all within the first half of the year.

A study carried out by the town planning department said at least 133 pedestrian crossing will be modified in various neighbourhoods in the town. The areas that require the most work are Los Pacos, Los Boliches and Carvajal. “The study highlighted these districts had the highest number of problematic crossings and we have also taken into consideration the recommendations and proposals collected by residents,” said a spokesman.
Over the last few years about 95 percent of the pedestrian crossings have been remodelled to ensure they are adapted for those with mobility problems.

But it is the Mayor’s wish to have “in 2010, a town which is completely accessible and free of any barriers.” She added, “ We are striving to a town which is convenient and equal for everyone.”

As part of this policy, Oña also highlighted the work which has been undertaken in public buildings, as well as the on-going project to widen pavements.
