Works on Pueblosol complex in Benalmadena to be resumed

Alter more than tour years, work has resume don the Pueblosol Project in the Heart of Arroyo de la Miel. The privately owned venture, which includes an underground car park for 820 cars, a tree-lined boulevard and a shopping centre, was put on hold in 2006 after nearly a decade of delays and obstacles.
In January, the Town Hall stepped in as a mediator between the two companies who are carrying out the project after internal talks had failed to produce any agreement to move forward. “This project is key to the development and revitalization of Arroyo de la Miel,” said the Mayor, Enrique Moya, during a visit to the site with the bosses of Spanish property group Tremón, and the constructor Comsa.

“In January we took the first step, today we take the second, but the important one will be the third, which sees the opening of this complex after being paralysed for years,” said Councillor for Town Planning, Jesús Fortes.

The Town Hall’s enthusiasm for Pueblosol is matched by those living nearby. “We know that is will be busy, noisy and disruptive whilst they’re doing the work, but at least it is moving again. There’s been this temporary car park on the site whilst they’ve been trying to figure out what they’re doing and a huge skeleton of a building looming over the site. It’s been a blot on the landscape for years and an eye sore right in the middle of the town,” says Pat Bennett.

Local bar owner, Pete Hall, is hoping that if the project will have a positive effect for Benalmadena businesses in the area. “One of the big problems in Arroyo is parking, so this will encourage people to come here if they know they can park easily in the town centre. I’m hoping the shopping centre that will have big high street shopping chains so that people don’t have to go to out of town to get what they want,” he says. “I’ve seen the plans for the boulevard that they’ll build on the top of the underground car park, and it looks very nice indeed,” adds Pat.

The funding, including a 600,000 euro grant from the Ministry for Equality and Social Welfare and 1.5 million through the State Fund for the Modernisation of Tourist Infrastructure, is in place.
